Sonya Fraser interviewed by DM News on SPP’s DB surplus release paper
Following The Society of Pension Professionals’ paper “DB Surplus Release: risks, rewards, responsibilities”, Partner and SPP member Sonya Fraser was interviewed by DM News on surplus release, the government’s plans to harness its potential and possible risks.
In the interview, Sonya explained the recent surplus release landscape, discussing how we are currently witnessing a “perfect storm”, with scheme funding levels having improved dramatically and a “growing political focus on unlocking pension scheme surplus and encouraging productive finance and investment in the UK economy.”
Commenting on the government’s plans and forthcoming legislative changes, however, Sonya highlighted that “whether the government’s flexibilities result in their desired outcome remains to be seen.” Sonya continued that “while there will be risks to be managed, with the right governance structures and protections in place, the new flexibilities have the potential to improve outcomes for all pension scheme stakeholders.”
