She advises on a wide variety of day-to-day pensions issues, such as new legal developments, pensions tax, member queries, trustee duties and discretions, valuation negotiations and interpretation of scheme rules.

She also has a large amount of experience advising on project work, such as end-game planning and risk transfer projects (including use of scheme surplus), benefit changes, GMP equalisation / conversion and scheme mergers.

In the defined contribution world, Sonya has advised both trustees of master trusts and single-employer trusts in relation to regulatory developments, master trust authorisation and ongoing supervision, DC transfers and, more recently, a number of transfers of DB surplus into an authorised master trust. She has also supported trustees in establishing a new DC section of a single-employer trust in order to utilise DB surplus within the scheme.

Sonya sits on the SPP’s DB Committee and the Pensions UK Herts Local Group Committee, and is a member of the Pensions Equity Group. She frequently speaks at conferences and events discussing key pensions issues faced by the industry.
